A veneer is a layer of material that is payed over a tooth to give it protection or to prevent further damage if already suffering. They’re usually used to protect aesthetic teeth to prevent infections and are made from two materials. The first is composite and the second is dental porcelain.

Veneers may be directly built into the mouth when performing dental implant surgery or could be added later is signs of possible problems begin to occur. A built in veneer would be composite. Indirectly fabricated veneers are made up in laboratories by dental technicians and are made of the dental porcelain. These are added later using a dental resin called Panavia.

A full veneer crown is described as “a restoration that covers all the coronal tooth surface”. However, a laminate veneer is a thin layer that only covers the surface of the tooth and is usually only used for aesthetic purposes.

The invention of veneers is unlike any des covert of dental treatment because it was invented for a Hollywood film set. California dentist Charles Pincus, in 1928 came up with the Idea when he worked on temporarily changing the appearance of actors’ teeth. He then, in 1937 fabricated veneers to be retained by dental adhesive. They were only ever used temporarily though as adhesive wasn’t a common supply at the time. Etching was then introduced in the 1950s by Dr. Michael Buonocore. He researched the idea of etching veneers to enamel on the tooth which started a line of investigation into attaching porcelain veneers to enamel.

Im 1982 it was discovered by Simonsen and Calamia that porcelain could be etched using hydrofluoric acid. It could create bond strengths between composite resins and porcelain to hold the veneers in place permanently.

The knowledge of veneers has been vastly researched over the years and now it is a common skill used in dentistry everyday. Today, improved cements have created veneers that can last anywhere from 10-30 years. They do still require replacement sure to wear when you chew and bite down on them. The cost of veneers can depend on the tooth and the dentist. Prices range from £1000 to £3000 per tooth and porcelain veneers are less likely to stain and are more durable than composite ones.
